~SELLING FRACTIONS FOR MOTHER~

Their family was very happy, except for one thing. They were very poor. Every day, little Chelsea had to go to the fields to collect carrots, potatoes, and beans for supper. Jimmy went to the cow barn to milk the cows in the mornings and at night. Emma and Lily collected eggs from the hens. Thomas, as the oldest, helped his father in the forest as a lumberjack. But of course, mother had the most important job. She did the washing, cooked in the kitchen, and did much more.

One day, in late fall, mother fell ill. The children and their father brought her to the doctors, but they did not have enough money to pay the expenses for her medicine. The children and their father went home upset.

“We must help her,” said Emma. “But how?” The children spent many days thinking, and one day, Thomas had an idea.

“Why don't we bake and sell some foods, like pie, for money? After we earn so much, we can help mother, and get her medicine!” Everyone was very happy with the idea, and all worked very hard to get their store open. On day one, the girls decided they wanted to make and sell carrot pies. The recipe called for...

-  5-1/2 fresh from the garden carrots (1 bucket)

-  1-1/2 cups of flour (¼ of a bucket)

-  1 pail of milk

-  2 farm fresh eggs

(makes only one pie)

That day, the family sold twenty-five carrot pies. The girls were very proud of themselves for baking the pies. Then the family remembered the reason they baked in the first place. “We don't have enough money,” Chelsea whimpered. “Now what?”

“We must bake more. More, more, more!” Jimmy said with a grin. He liked his job. Everyone agreed for mother's sake. So on day two, the girls made potato soup. The recipe called for...

-  2 filled to the tip pails of potato chunks

-  3 buckets of water

-  1 bar of cheddar cheese

(makes only one bowl of soup)

That day, the family sold forty bowls of piping hot potato soup. The family had enough enough money for medicine! Soon, mother got better. Everything went back to normal again, and all were happy!
